With inverter technology, an air conditioner cools at maximum capacity upon startup, then automatically slows down and operates at minimum capacity to maintain a comfortable room temperature. Non-inverter models can only operate with simple on-off controls. Trying to maintain the desired temperature by repeatedly turning the power on and off consumes significantly more electricity and results in greater temperature fluctuations.
